SIAL Sound Studios officially opened in 2004 and were housed in Building 9 at RMIT, as part of the Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory (SIAL) in the School of Architecture and Design at RMIT University. In 2013, the facility was moved to the RMIT Design Hub, and became part of RMIT’s School of Design which opened in 2018.
SIAL Sound Studios is now an integral part of the Master of Design, Innovation & Technology (MDIT), with staff teaching into MDIT design studios, electives and collaborating with other disciplines within the degree through the Immersive Experience stream. Previous MDIT studios are listed here.
As with other streams in MDIT, our design studios and electives involve research led teaching, close integration to staff research, partnerships with organisations both inside and outside RMIT, and involvement of HDRs in teaching, which has led to a dynamic culture of knowledge.
Since 2004, SIAL Sound Studios have produced cultural events in theatre, concerts, exhibitions and workshops, while also partnering on creative practice research. SIAL Sound Studios is the only electroacoustic studio in Australia to regularly curate and produce events on a speaker orchestra.
The history of sound in design and architecture at RMIT dates back to the 1990’s and saw publications, projects and design studios prior to SIAL Sound Studios opening in 2004. Over the intervening 30 years studios, electives, projects and events have been developed and delivered by over 27 academics employed through all design programs – interior, fashion and textiles, industrial, landscape and architecture.
Further information on the early history of sound in design and architecture at RMIT is available here.
