Soundscape Studies

This course investigates the sonic environment of urban and natural spaces.

Sound is a fundamental dimension of every place and experience.

It is becoming an integral design consideration in many fields including architecture, urban planning, experience design and health. We study sound, listener experience and environment qualities, questioning how these dimensions shape one another.

Through exploring sites in Melbourne over the semester, we learn to listen to, analyse and evaluate these environments. We study noise levels, listener comfort, sound and memory, ecology, and the spatial and perceptual effects of these sites. We then creatively compose with the everyday environment, using the soundscape as a creative tool to express listener experience.
