Field Recording Workshop

A public field recording workshop as part of the “Site and Sound: sonic art as ecological practice” exhibition at McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery

This public Field Recording Workshop ran in April 2021 as part of the “Site and Sound: sonic art as ecological practice” exhibition at McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery. The workshop explored the practice of field recording, including a review of the history of field recording, from its first use to contemporary applications.

Listening sessions gave participants the opportunity to hear diverse ethnographic and artistic field recordings. This was followed by a technical dive into field recording approaches, techniques and equipment, including microphone types, recording set-ups and practical considerations for working in-the-field.

A field recording station was set up in the park, using hydrophones, shotgun microphones and stereo recording arrays, offering participants the opportunity to see and hear different recording equipment and approaches. The workshop concluded with a hands-on practical component where participants used portable field recording equipment to capture their own recordings in the sculpture park bushland.
