Soundwalking & Soundmapping

A public soundwalking & soundmapping workshop as part of the “Site and Sound: sonic art as ecological practice” exhibition at McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery

This public workshop ran in April 2021 as part of the “Site and Sound: sonic art as ecological practice” exhibition at McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery.

In this workshop, participants of all ages, including children and adults, learnt to listen to and draw the soundscape around them. The workshop involved an introduction to the notion of the “soundscape” and its components. Through listening sessions, participants heard natural and urban soundscapes and learnt to identify soundscape features.

Graphic sound mapping activities invited participants to tune into the sounds around them and capture their listening experience visually. The workshop concluded with an interactive soundwalk through the sculpture park bushland. Participants were guided along a path through the parklands, weaving through sound installations embedded within the sculpture park. The soundwalk offered participants a new way to attune to the soundscape and its qualities while moving, interacting and listening.
